These Free Alternatives To Microsoft Office Show How AI Is Backfiring On Tech Companies
Microsoft is one of the biggest adopters of emerging AI tech, with two-thirds of the company's capital expenditures having gone toward hardware to power its AI capabilities in the second quarter of 2026. But, ironically, the growing trend of AI-developed software is threatening to create a world where no one needs Microsoft Office anymore. The Microsoft Office suite — officially branded as Microsoft 365 — is the company's golden goose that generates over $100 billion in revenue per year. Now, it's being usurped by alternatives that are entirely "vibe coded" through the use of AI.
The creator of ArtCraft — a popular Adobe Creative Cloud alternative — recently released WordCraft, a free-to-use word processor that functions much like Microsoft Word. There are also a slew of other Crafting apps available in the ArtCraft Launcher, including GridCraft to replace Microsoft Excel and CADCraft to replace Autodesk. All of these apps are vibe coded by ArtCraft developer Brandon Thomas, which is to say that they were developed by prompting AI agents to generate some or all of the code.
Thomas used the large language model (LLM) Claude as his vibe-coding assistant when developing his Crafting apps. It was just last year that Claude Code brought vibe coding to the web and iPhone, and Thomas has swiftly rolled out more than a dozen vibe coded apps under the ArtCraft banner since then. Suffice it to say, all of the corporate investment into AI is backfiring in a way, now that there are more free apps that can replace your Microsoft Office subscription.
Should vibe coded apps replace subscription-based software?
The official ArtCraft server on Discord has around 120,000 members at the time of this writing. There's a lot of support for this free toolset because it helps users feel that they are not locked in to using pricey subscription-based software. But does that mean you should hop on the bandwagon, too? Not necessarily; there's still a dark side of vibe coding that makes these tools risky to use.
In one high-profile incident, an AI vibe coding agent deleted an entire database. This is the type of risk you should consider before moving your important work over to ArtCraft. Even if the AI is overseen by a capable programmer, there's no guarantee that it won't misinterpret a command and suddenly execute a process that harms the user experience. By comparison, Microsoft Office is obligated to comply with contractual commitments and compliance standards that guarantee the safety of your data. A solo dev like Brandon Thomas is not subject to the same level of scrutiny.
However, there is an argument to be made that tools like ArtCraft are helping consumers more than large companies are. If you dislike AI, keep in mind that Microsoft is certainly not clean of it. There are even some default Windows features to turn off immediately if you want to keep your PC AI-free. We live in a time when consumers are often forced to pick the lesser of two evils, and maybe the one that doesn't charge you money is the better choice.
